Lightning strikes vary enormously in their power. If you were out in the open and on wet ground, a severe strike could kill you. If you were in a car, the lightning would strike the metalwork of the vehicle and discharge to earth. The body of the car would act as a Faraday Cage, directing the electric current via the metal to earth.

If lightning strikes 10 ft in front of you, more than likely you would be dead unless someone was nearby to resuscitate you.
