My guess would be because that puts them high above the water table/flood plain. Nothing sucks more than bodies bubbling out of saturated turf.

Actually, the graveyards of old where put on the place further est from the town, and on a hill because it was the least of desirable land.. After the town expanded, the towns caught up with, and past the established graveyards.. Graveyards of today are established with the most available land, and the hill factor is a non-issue. The biggest draw for the graveyards is, people are DYING to get in them!!

Not all graveyards are on hills. But in my country(NewZealand) many of the graveyards are on sacred hills. Many of the graves have Maori remains, and the Maori honors their dead in a special way.If they die in another part of the world, their remains must be returned to the place of their tribe or Iwi.But I guess that is the same with any graveyard. It is Hallowed ground.Sacred and special.

Not all cemetaries are on hills, I mean look at futurama, Fry's nephew was buried on another rock lol... but seriously, not all are on hills. the newer one's aren't but the older one's are i've noticed as well. My guess is it was more "scenic" I guess you could say and people weren't as lazy as they are today where they didn't mind walking uphill a mile to see Uncle Ned.

Hills are hard to plough. Soil washes away. Bury the dead on a hill and plough the bottom land.

All of them are not on hills. My guess would be that in the old days, hills were not much good for anything else. You couldn't farm on them or build a house on them.

Good question. I think it's because when it rains, the rain pours down from the hill, so is doesn't get damp, swampy. And so it's easier to dig a deep enough whole.
