I have a 9.8 hp mercury ser.#3002985 runs great bad lower unit. I bought a lower unit from a donor motor serial 3487589.
The gear change shaft from the donor is short, mine is long. Can i change just the shaft?

If you're only changing the lower unit ("foot"), this shouldn't be a problem at all.

The difference between Long & Short is the "leg", the section between the motor housing and the lower unit. These get swapped out all the time too.

I believe you are saying that you have a long shaft and the donor is a short shaft. Absolutely you can just change the shift shaft.
