Various reasons-- because of the death of a character, the mild swearing, secular humanism, even Satanism I suppose because of the fantasy elements.

Because people are morons. I thought that the book/movie was sad as hell but pretty harmless on the whole. Mild fantasy with a death involved, there's definitely worse out there.
