I believe Kroger is the largest supermarket chain. I live less than a half-mile from a Kroger store, less than five miles from a Meijer's store and less than six miles from a WalMart grocery. I don't shop at any of them. Instead, I drive sixteen miles to a locally-owned, independent grocer who gives me more personal service, provides me with fresher, less contaminated food - and actually calls me by name! Yes, I pay a little more, but it's all worth it. PLUS, all of his profits are returned to my local community instead of being shipped back to Cincinnati, Grand Rapids or Bentonville. PLUS, he actually sponsors a local little league team, is active in our local Kiwanis club, and makes generous donations whenever there's a benefit to help a family in need. PLUS, he doesn't rely on slave labor in China or browbeat his suppliers into bankruptcy just so he can increase his own profit margins. PLUS he's a member of the local Chamber of Commerce. PLUS he participates in local events, contributes to local charities, and helps out at the local food bank. -RKO- 12/08/07
