I'm going to buy a MSI K9A2 PLATINUM 790FX (AM2+) motherboard

I know it is crossfire compatable but can i use a GeForce 8800GT with it even tho its not Crossfire compatable. I dont want to run it in SLI. i just want this one gfx card to work!

also, must i really use vista with the 8800GT or will that only become important once some directx10 games come out?

Yes, since it's still a PCI-E slot. Crossfire ready just means it would run crossfire (two ATis) but not SLI. And no, you don't need Vista to run the 8800GT, but you won't be running Dx10 (thought it appears you know that already).

The 8800 GT should work with the motherboard. It is very rare, but possilbe that you might get a conflict.

As you already point out, to get DX10, you need vista. You will not be able to run crossfire as that is ATI cards.

Good luck

Yes, if it is a PCI Express supporting motherboard (which this one is) and if it is a PCI Express video card (which the 8800 GT is) you will have no problems running a single card. SLI is only supported on motherboards with NVIDIA chipsets (at least as of now, they may licence the SLI technology to others like Intel in the future)
