The rubber gasket was designed to seal without the use of sealants. The reason that they're telling you to use a few dots of adhesive is to hold it still while you place it and bolt it down.Try this first. Insert the bolts through the cover and gasket. If the bolts fit tight into the gasket holes, then that's all you need to hold it in place while you snug them up then tighten them. If that don't do it then just go back to plan A. put a few small dots of adhesive on the cover and fit the gasket. Let it set for a little while so it will stick when you turn it upright for installation.

Permatex RTV Black, that stuff is flexible, yet strong as cement. I used it to seal an oil pan (that I then had to remove the next day, Doh!), and I totally F*ed up the oil pan prying it off because the RTV had such a hold on it! I even used a razor blade to slice as much of it as possible and lessen it's grip
