If you are talking about fastest growing grass from seed, then it is clearly ryegrass. Ryegrass sprouts witing 5 - 10 days compared to other grasses like kentucky bluegrass where germination time could be up to 4 weeks. Kentucky Bluegrass is very slow growing grass to established from seed as compared to ryegrass. You can even go to a cheaper rye called annual ryegrass. Going by the name, it will only last for one year. But what ever you do, before purchasing grass seed, make sure you are buying quality seed. There are many good seed companies that are in the store, like Scott's Grass Seed. You will pay a little bit more now but will save money in the long run. Once all grasses are established, they are really grow about the same. You just have to feed your lawn several times per year, water it, and keep it healthy. Hope this helps.

Technically the fastest growing grass is bamboo. If you are talking lawn grasses, tall fescue grows rapidly under ideal conditions, faster than bermuda or creeping fescue.

In our area, annual rye grows fast in the spring, but you must plant other grasses along with it, because it will die out. It does give the other grasses time to grow and green up, though.
