I'm not sure of the answer to your question of if there actually is an answer, but studs were usually added later at the retailer. Mud (snow) tires all had small holes molded into the lugs and the studs were (are) shaped like a pop rivet. Inserted into the hole and the rubber gripped around the flat area and held them in place. Most states prohibited studded tires on non-winter months because they'd damage soft asphalt roads in summer.
