I am a single dad in charge of a 12 y-o daughter.. I would be just. I would be merciful. I would consider the situation from their pont of view. Then I would crush them. If the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalyse" threatened to hurt my girl they will be cowering under a bush the next day. The perpetrator might think that a slap on the wrist and 60 days community service is a just and fair punishment. Not I.
By the way, call the Pollies if you must. This is only my point of view, I got taken to court recently because some little Jock ******** saw fit to call me a pervert. No prizes for guessing what happened. Only the British Rail pollies stopped me from getting into further trouble. It was perharps a little out of order for me to try and shove the guy into a rubbish bin,

if you would rather sort it yourself, you better don't tell anyone and let a few heavies do the job; whether that is a good idea, is another Q, which you must answer for yourself. just remember, your kid is still exposed and nobody always around to protect it, the same situation could occur again.
I think, in such a situation it would be wise to approach the police and attempt to clarify the background and maybe attempt mediation with those people, who are involved;
it sometimes works, not always though!
I would imagine, they come out of dis-functional families and have a lot of problems themselves, these people create a lot of trouble and should be made known to the authorities, as their actions will proceed and damage others as well!

it is well understood the answers given where they indicate a response by the relatives to the mugging and the threat by use of an offensive weapon.
But common sense must prevail here, This is, immediately a \Police Matter they should, be notified
, To take action as a civilian against the offender would put you, on the wrong side of the law.and you could possibly, be facing arrest.

I would phone the Police - I would not risk myself like that and the police are highly trained to handle this sort of situation, I am not.
The satisfaction I would no doubt get from smaking the little *** one is outweighed by the fear that my children could be waking up the next day without a Mother.

As little confidence as the police seem to inspire in justice these days, you owe it to yourself and your child to file a report with them. At the very least this leaves the beginning of a paper trail if they fail to act.
This is a case when the pen is mightier than the sword. If they don't act, call again, write again and get in touch with your MP. It might sound useless, but if you make a constant annoyance of yourself they will sort it out just to shut you up. You could also try talking to the local papers if you want to, and mention this in your letters to the police.
Of course, these actions must be complemented with action by you, but I don't mean taking any kind of revenge or justice of your own. Tell your kid to avoid bad areas, stick in groups with his or her mates and be home after dark. It might sound strict, but if you fear a repeat attack it is better than a trip to the hospital to claim a body. That might seem shocking, but these things go bad sometimes.
It is sad that we have come to this, not just because of poor self-defense laws or poor policing, but because of the way our society has lost all concept of respect and the idea that you shouldn't do something to someone else that you wouldn't want done to you. Hopefully things will change with all of that with a little bit of work by all of us who care, but until then I hope my answer gives you some help and protection.
Take care.

You know, this question really got to me.....this is because, when my daughter was a child, she was stabbed in the leg with a flick knife.....by another child. Unfortunatly nothing could be done about it because the child was under ten years old and not accountable by law. i think the person should that gave her the knife should have been accountable, but in this case not so, as there was no proof.
The whole bl***y system for this and other things in this country sucks.

To be honest, knife crime is so vile and criminal, that it can only be a police matter. Remember, knives kill and are all too prevalent nowadays. And if this is a school matter, the school needs to be brought into the picture asap as well. Yes, you must go to the police, perhaps next time you could be reporting a murder.

My stepson, Paul, was mugged at knifepoint and had his ipod stolen. A friend of his knew the attacker and sorted it out himself. - The friend's father was huge and so the mugger didn't take much pursuading to give it back!
Paul had been on the way to the shop to buy chocolate and was unhurt so I told him, "I told you chocolate was bad for you!"

I'd call the police. Legal trouble at any age will come back to haunt you throughout your life. Knowing that would give me more satisfaction than beating up a kid.

Get the police involved. If it turns out that the mugger was relatively intelligent and either got rid of the stuff they took as well as had a cover story, they could prosecute 'you' if you go after them.
