This is what the damper and chimney flu are for, you adjust the damper as the fire grows, then "damper" it down accordingly. I suggest you find out More about this before you get to involved, this is a basic to making a fire.

Get the wood you are going to burn ready and then light a piece of newspaper. Hold it above the wood so you get an updraft going up the chimney. Once the smoke from the paper starts going up, light your wood.

Start with a wide open flue and build a small starter fire. You must heat up the entire flue to create a updraft. It only takes a few minutes

The easiest is warm up the air in the flue pipe by burning wadded up news paper on top of the wood.
