That they weren't really comfortable around you, or sure how you would react, but feel safer, more secure on MSN because if things get hairy or uncomfortable they can turn you off, cut you out, without having to deal with you.
Since MSN is less personal, they may feel its a good way of establishing contact, without the dis-ease of a face to face meeting.
It might mean that, even though you are ex's they would like to keep a dialog going. Sort of no hard feelings?
