I'm getting ready to install Windows XP Pro on a computer. I want to make 2 extra partitions for Linux or maybe Solaris. Do I have to make these partitions during the install process or can I leave unpartitioned space and make the partitions with windows disk management.

So you just mke the Windows partition and leave the rest open? Then when you install Linux make a Linux partition in the unpartitioned space?

Install XP normally. Do not bother to partition the drive.

Then, install Linux and it will allow you to set it up as Dual-Boot and give you the option to create a partition Without wiping XP out.

Here's a decent video:

good choice :) ... the easiest way to do this is simply to install windows on its own, and allow it to take up the entire harddrive, and then to install linux over the top of it. most linux distributions such as ubuntu will then automaticly create space for themselves (however much you choose) and a boot loader (a program which starts when you start the computer, where you can choose which OS you want to use).

you must create a partition for XP with the CD, so just use part of your hard drive space, and leave the rest for future use.
