You can cancel a request.
1) Go to Privacy: http://www.facebook.com/privacy.php
2) Enter their name in "Block People"
3) *friend request canceled*
They still get the notification e-mail if they opted for it, but it cancels the friend request like you asked.

I don't think that you can cancel the request but you can remove the person once he/she has accepted the friend request. You can also block the person if they prove to be a nuisance. However, if the person doesn't know you, he/she may not accept the request anyway.

No, you cannot until they confirm and ignore you. And keep in mind, once they receive the friend request, they will be able to see your profile, but will not be able to post on your wall. Be careful who you send friend request to, because they will be able to see your profile until they accept or ignore it.

Nope you can't cancel a friend request. It remains in their notifications forever! Well, until they confirm or ignore you...
