I am going to be selling stuff online and have had a friend or two say "Beware of Ebay" or "Do NOT use Ebay?" But then I hear from a lot of people who love it. My buddies who sell online say Ebay is risky due to buyers not paying, etc ... and there's nothing you can do about it.

Can't you refuse to ship an item until it is paid for? One of them told me "no" because then you'll get negative feed back based on slow shipping and that would kill your reputation immediately. Any advice? Is it best to stay away from Ebay now?

Thanks for any advice or help you can give! =)

I sell frequently on ebay and I never ever ship until payment is cleared. Ebay as well as paypal recommends that. There are those out there who just bid and win with no intentions of paying. I've had that happen twice and always make sure I report them and give them a negative score. No one has ever gave me negative feedback on my shipping time no mater how long it took to send it....it depends on how fast they pay it.

Of course you can refuse to ship an item until you've received payment!!!!!!!! That's good business sense.

Definitely consider using Paypal as a payment option. Seller Protection is available.

And when it comes to shipping, be clear in your listing how and when you ship the item. It's not your fault if you ship something in good faith, and then the postal service lets you down. So make sure you get a certificate of postage to prove exactly where and when you shipped the item.

Don't stay away from eBay, because there are quite a lot of honest buyers around!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at the the entire feedback file of the seller before you buy.

Actuallu ebay is risky for buyers because some sellers aren't ethical. There was an ebay seller who had two cell phones on auction, the total with shipping and handling added up to over $400.00, the buyers sent a money order, it was cashed and all they got were two sheets of paper, photocopies of the picture in the auction.
The buyer had phoned the seller and he was rather cokcy and arrogent. The buyer and her daughter filed a case with Judge Judy and was rewarded $5000.00.
These buyers had reported them the police department in their area, they are investing them because they had ripped of eight other buyers.
Ebay closed these fraudulent sellers, and ebay has them on file. Any information ebay has, has been given to the authorities.

I wouldn't go near Ebay i brought a $300 Phone off someone he had perfect feedback and everything and i paid for it and he never sent it and Ebay said they would cancel his account and any future accounts and they still haven't and I've contacted him many time and the only reply i got was sorry i will post it soon and i still haven't received the phone or my money back and the Ebay people haven't done a thing to help.when you put in a dispute it has a certain amount of time for Ebay to fix i or it times out and all the disputes I've put in have just timed out.

I've never had any problems either, always pay by or get paid by paypal and you're covered, I always check a sellers feedback before I buy from them and you should never send items until it's paid for, if they pay, for example, by echeque through paypal just send the buyer a message saying the item will be shipped as soon as the payment is cleared.

Ebay is so 2004..

Kidding..

I would say from the very start that you will refuse to ship the item until it has been paid for. Put it in the item description or something..

I thought Ebay was short for Elf Bay ... you know a place where you could meet ...elfs. I short so I thought ... you know .... meet some people I could tower over. Any way I used Ebay to arrange for a 5 day, 18 night trip and sent my money to PayPatty. Needless to say I never got my tickets...... don't trust 'em unless you can touch 'em.

I've never had any problems with Ebay. As long as you only accept payments through a PayPal...you will get paid, or they can't complete the order. Just don't accept check or M.O. and you should be ok.
