I want to try out for the talent show in my school. I'm in seventh grade. I don't have many presentable talents other than singing or playing the piano. I haven't had piano lessons in a while, but I can play Fur Elise (full version), a short staccato march, and the short version of the Entertainer. However, I really do want to sing. Right now, the only songs I've memorized are White Houses (not appropriate), a Japanese anime theme song, and two that can't be performed without background music, which I can't get without violating copyright laws. I'm a seventh grade girl, so do you have any suggestions as to what I can do for the auditions?

Can you email anyone to see if it would be ok for you to perform the song at your jr. high? If they say no, they say no but why would they care? Also, to be honest how would they know? I don't advocate violating copyright law but I'm not sure that it is. If you own the song on CD and you are not performing for money then I don't see how that's violatinf anything.

I don't know White Houses, but can it be edited to be appropriate? There are plenty of music editing programs where you can loop a more appropriate word in from another part of the song or whatever works for you. I do it all the time.

As for background tracks, there are TONS available. Depending on how much time you have the director of the show may let you audition with just the megining of your song memorized as long as you let them know you will be working on the rest nad have it done before the last rehearsal.

Choose a song that you like, will show off your voice and you think your classmates will also enjoy. That's it.

good luck,
Marianne

I'm sure that there is plenty of time to learn a new song, and many artists sell some of their more popular songs' background music that you can buy. It's the song without the lead vocals. You can look into buying one of those; they're usually only about $3 to $5.

I don't know about your skill level, but since the holidays are approaching, Trans Siberian Orchestra would be cool. Particularly "Carol of the Bells." If you want to stay away from that, I would go with something everybody knows like "It's The End Of The World" by REM, or "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen.
