For the emerging Balkan states, the declining power of the Ottoman Empire was less important than the rivalries between the Great Powers. I have to write a short essay on this topic and any ideas would be appreciated

The Balkan states were caught in a three-way war of cultures. Russia and Eastern Europe had a great influence manifested through common religion and language. Western Europe and the U.S. had a great influence through modern technology, trade, and the emergence of the European Union. Islam and Middle East had a strong pull on many people of Bosnia and isolated parts of the other countries.
If I wrote an essay on the subject, Marshall Tito would be a major character. I might also use the Sarajevo Olympics as an example of how the region was finding a new identity.
