It's a folk song, no one know.

Memê,

"The House of the Rising Sun" is a United States folk song.

The original was based on a ***** spiritual - haven't a clue who wrote that, but Alan Price wrote and arranged the 'Animals' hit.

No-one knows. It's a traditional tune.

"Like many classic folk ballads, the authorship of "The House of the Rising Sun" is uncertain. Folklorist Alan Lomax, author of the seminal 1941 songbook Our Singing Country, wrote that the melody was taken from a traditional English ballad and the lyrics written by a pair of Kentuckians named Georgia Turner and Bert Martin. Other scholars have proposed different explanations, although Lomax's is generally considered most plausible."

(Alan Lomax had nothing whatsoever to do with the writing of the tune itself, contrary to the assertion in the answer below. He was an American folklorist and musicologist who archived many precious recordings, and was not known as a songwriter.)

The oldest known existing recording is by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, from 1934, although most people would say that the most famous version is by The Animals.

The original writer is lost in the mists of time as it's what's known as a "traditional" song...

HOWEVER

When "The Animals" recorded it they were young and naive and wanted to make it look good.
As Alan Price was well known as a musician worth his salt - they put him down as 'arranger'... upshot is - Alan gets all the royalties every time it's played and; despite his fantastic vocals; Eric Burden - and the rest of the Animals get diddly squat!

Which reputedly causes tensions to this day!

I knew Eric Burden and it is true that he hated the song. He never said why but he would curse for 5 minutes about the song before performing it for the fans.

It IS an old fold song/tradional song, but Bob Dylan "arranged it".
