I don't think you can look for happiness, its something you have to FEEL and sense. Its not something external, its not a commodity that you can seek, track down and possess.
Happiness comes about from fleeting moments of "flow" where you are fully absorbed in something which you enjoy. Something you are passionate about, something you can do which fills you with enough joy so you momentarily manage to stop all the "rational" "logical" thoughts, worries and hum-drum of daily life. You have a feeling and sense of complete wholeness.... nothing matters, nothing can reach you. Alas it never lasts very long!
Start by engaging in opportunity's to DO more things. Find things which stoke your fire and fill you with passion. Be that reading a book, digging the garden or riding a horse (personal favourite!!!) Its always something which involves your active participation. You can't find happiness without being an active participant.
Accepting yourself with all your good points and flaw helps. Healthy sense of self-esteem... security and feeling safe.

Happiness is a state of integrity that gives rise to the feeling of joy.
In other words, be true to yourself and others. Don't make compromises out of fear, doing things you don't want to do, like working jobs you don't like, staying in relationships that aren't working for you or doing anything that drains your energy.
Also, don't stop yourself from doing the things you do want to do. Joy is God's guidance. God wants you to be happy. Follow your joy.
The first step is probably to get in touch with the blocked feelings you have about all the times you have already betrayed yourself. Forgive yourself and anyone else involved. Privately and safely release and express (through movement and sound) the feelings and energy you've been holding inside.
Whenever we betray ourselves we have inner conflict, which is a lack of integrity and a lack of happiness. Look for personal integrity and you will find happiness.

Happiness is a gimmick...
Wikipedia defines happiness as Happiness is an emotion in which one experiences feelings ranging from contentment and satisfaction to bliss and intense joy.
Which is a load of nonsense. Happiness can come from anywhere. Just be confident and proud and soon happiness will follow.

Most unhappy people expect others to make them happy, and when they continue being unhappy, they blame it on various people in thier lives. How do you find happiness on your own? Focus on doing the things you enjoy such as exercising or traveling, then pick up a hobbie and drop the habbits that seem to not contribute to your happiness like excessive television viewing or eating unhealthily.

Most people start looking for happiness by being a consumer.
Just to save you time and money, that's not the place to look.
Find peace with yourself and sculpt yourself into someone you would be proud to be.
"Do not look at your faults, still less of others, look for what is moral and just and your faults will drop off like dead leaves when there time comes."
(I can't remember who said that...)

Within yourself. Happiness is perceived; many extremely poor people are happy because they accept their lot in life. If you always want more, you will never be happy. Be content with what you have; in face of illness or adversity, remember that "these too will pass".

I don't agree with any of the above answers. I think happiness is to be found by GIVING to other people whether it be within the family or outside (i.e. charity work)

The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes to do,
but in liking what one has to do.

Forget about it. There's no such thing. The purpose of this life is to struggle in misery till the day you die.
