What are the characteristics that make "Mass Effect" an RPG game?

Does this game beat Assasin's Creed? It is a must-have just to RPG fans or it should be considered also by any 360 owner?

Like the other guy said u play the role of a character i don't think it beats assassin's creed but i do thank it is a must have for all 360 owners
