I am rebuilding my 1600 cc motor and need to know how to tell if you need a valve job. There is a red tinted build up on the exhaust valves (pretty thick) but its inside the hole where the exhaust comes out and where the combustion happens but not as thick. The intake valves have black build up but not very oily and is it ok to use engine brite on my heads to clean them.

If you're rebuilding the engine, rings, bearings etc. don't skip a good valve job. The valves have just as much wear as the rest of the parts and you'll be tearing it down again soon if you don't do them. While you're at it have them put hardened seats in. They will stand up to unleaded gas. The lead kept the valves cooler in the old cars so hard seats weren't needed.

Any time you rebuild a vw you replace the ex. valves for safety. They the one that usually breaks.
