Meat is essential in any big family dinner. Goose was the tradition until 1851 when Queen Victoria started the tradition on Turkey on Christmas. She was an icon even here in America so the tradition started.

Probably same reason as for Thanksgiving. Back when we settled this country, turkeys ran wild in the woods. Still do! So they made a good meal and it was cheap, yet just big enough to not have any leftovers. And back then they didn't have refrigeration, so it wouldn't have made sense to eat a cow or pig, which was much larger.

And I would add, that eating turkey for Christmas dinner isn't all that widespread as a tradition. My family never, ever ate turkey at Christmas. We preferred ham. I was just little then, so I had no choice, and just ate whatever was cooked.

It's tradition for many people. However, just as many people eat something else since they don't want the same meal two holidays in a row (even though there is a whole month in between). Ham is just as much a tradition for Christmas dinner, if not moreso.

Italians traditionally eat seafood. Hispanics traditionally fix tamales.

ever try to carve jello? seriously, i think it's because there is usually a large number of people eating together on Christmas, and one turkey will feed more people than a chicken
