A woman, calling Mount Sinai Hospital, said, "Hello, I want to know if a patient is getting better."

The voice on the other end of the line said, "What is the patient's name and room number?"

She said, "Yes, darling! She's Sarah Finkel, in Room 302."

He said, "Oh, yes. Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she's had two full meals, her blood pressure is fine, she's going to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours and if she continues this improvement, Dr. Cohen is going to send her home Tuesday."

The woman said, "Thank God! That's wonderful! Oh! That's fantastic! That's wonderful news!"

The man on the phone said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you must be a close family member or a very close friend!"

She said, "I'm Sarah Finkel in 302! Cohen, my doctor, doesn't tell me a word!"

Wow. There could be many legal issues what if you had just gave birth, so weirdo out there could have be after your baby instead of all the medical information give out. That person should have been given notice are a repremane. There are laws against this. As for me my mother was in the hospital dying and I could not make it in time so I made arrangements with her and her nurses that I would be calling at the same time each day that I was not there to see how she was doing. Making a list of people in your life that need this kind of information with your doctors and nurses is always a good ideal and anyone that is not on your list be it daughter, sister, mother, father, husband or priest should not have to right to any medical information.s

Look up the number for the Veteran's Administration in your area. You can get a lot of iseful information by phone. You will need your aeparation papers, as in DD-214 and. or your discharge certificate. You will have to fill out a claim to get medical care through the VA and it could take some time to process your claim. The amount of active duty service time requirement would have to be asked of the VA. You may also have a local VA outreach office in your area that can help you with answers and forms.

When I worked in the telephone industry the pay phones on hospital wards would not accept incoming calls to prevent other patients from giving out perhaps false or inappropriate information IE Oh you want poor Mrs Jones sorry she died this morning( oh dear wrong Mrs Jones). When the industry was privatised this practise stopped I often wondered if stopping it caused any distress?

I'm guessing you're saying a joke, but in reality, a hospital can't give out any information on a patient unless the patient agrees to it. HIPAA prevents this. I used to work in a doctor's office and I'd have spouses call and ask about their husband/wife's account and unless their spouse put on their HIPAA form they were allowed information, I wasn't able to tell them anything. I think when George Clooney was in the hospital recently, 5 people got fired for revealing some personal information on him. They deserved it.

I worked in law for over 16 years and subpoenaed medical records -- learned a LOT about privacy in the medical profession. My husband and I both NOW work in hospitals and if that truly happened, that person would have been fired. A person's medical history/treatment is under the privacy act and none of that information should have been given out -- even if it's good news.

Funny but I work at a hospital and they would never give out info on the phone only a family member would be given that info in person only. But that's really funny !! If I'm ever a patient I'll have to try it!! LOL

Too bad she had to call to find out her own condition. Of course it should have not have been given out, but in this case it had a happy ending.
