Oh yeah i did an oil change and the filter. I check the air filter and its dirty. Thats all i know.

Well one place to start is by changing the air filter. You can start the car for a couple of minutes and the pull a spark plug. Don't let it run too long because it will get hot and be harder to remove the plugs. If they are wet and smell like fuel then the computer is spraying too much fuel for some reason or there is an injector(s) bad. A common problem is the mass airflow sensor. It tells the computer how much airflow is coming into the engine. When this goes bad it can tell the computer that the motor is getting a whole bunch of air even though it's only idling. After fixing the rich fuel mixture problem a tune up will likely be needed.

First, you want to check the easy and inexpensive most likely causes.

Theft. Do you have a locking gas lid or cap?

Tuneup. An old spark plug not firing will cost you 25% or more of your gas mileage and much of your power. Every 25-30,000 miles. They are very easy to get to in a 4 cyl. and are a classic easy do-it-yourself job.

A brake dragging. I seem to remember one of my Honda's front brake calipers rusting solid after many years and causing constant dragging of the brake, which your engine would have to burn more gas to overcome. Is one of the front wheel rims much hotter than the other after driving for a while? Feel the metal wheel, not the hub cap.

I'm sure the other suggestions offered also have serious merit. Hope you find it.

Best regards,
Mike

The air filter can make your engine work harder to breath in air when it is dirty. If the filter is clean I would go with a tune-up spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I have seen the fuel rails crack on those cars before also. Do you smell gas? Even if the catalytic converters are clogged it can run poorly.

The head temperature sensor is another piece that can affect fuel mileage.Lots of carbon on intake valves also, soaking up some fuel...13 year old car may need some special attention to rings & valves even though it runs normal.Good luck.

30 bucks, thats 10 gallons thats 17.3 mpg. How does that compare to normal? Get a tuneup and replace that filter.

sounds like you need a good service. try some redex in your tank when you next fuel up aswell it will clean your fuel lines.
