ok... i know this is sci-fi like, and I know there's no sump pump that could do the job...lol... but I'm sure we could figure a way to take water off the earth... if the sea level rises too much, what do you think would happen if we pumped it somewhere into space?

yeah, i wasn't REALLY trying to solve the problem of rising water levels.... it was just a crazy thought.... I agree that we need that water to survive. I just thought this was an interesting thought.

Well, if we pumped it off the earth, it would reduce the water levels. I guess it would just float around in outer space, along with all the other junk (dead satellites and what not) that is already floating around out there.

But, its cheaper and easier (and also in our best interest) to try to reduce the factors leading to a rise in sea level.

Water is too much of a necessity for life and if you're pumping away water like that we're threatening our life potential. If we pump it up to space then its gone, taking some mass off Earth and placing it into space orbit. There are some more energy efficient ways. If you rather spend all that energy to pump all that water up to space then why not just spend all that energy into freezing the water back to ice :D. Of course, this will never be a solution but keep thinking!

if sea level rises and we pump water into space, how would we get it back when sea level dropped?

nothing (should) change. The only risk is that some aerobic bacteria get out there and multipli like carzy and then it come back to earth and we all die
