My punishment to them would be to make them pay back every single penny they owe, plus more for damages, plus a million hours of community sentence.. What good would they do in prison really? They'll only suck out more money from being in there.

What sentence could be comparable to the thought you have lied and misled your children on such a matter.
If found guilty they will have to repay the insurance money, in short they up s***t creek without a paddle.
As for the cost of the RNLI and coastguard, umpteen people get away with this every year by ignoring the safe crossing times on the Holy Island causeway.

As soon as I figure out what a "sentance" is, I'll let you know! ;)
Seriously, though, given the details from the link, below and from other sources, the charges are (at least) "obtaining money by deception" (i.e., insurance fraud to the sum of UK 25,000; approx US 50,000) and "making a false declaration to get a passport".
Unfortunately, I don't know what British sentences are in this matter, but, considering that he appears to have been brilliant in the execution of this crime (i.e., he was sane when the crime was committed) he should get the maximum allowed by law, and, of course, repay all that he stole. The passport issue is one for the Panama authorities to deal with, if at all (i.e., extradite him after the British sentence has been fulfilled). The wife should be tried as an accessory, unless, of course, she turns out to be the mastermind, in which case, the roles would be reversed.

my punishment to them would be not to give them another thought or ounce of airtime, media attn, publicity. they have already had too much . i consider this a trivial story that ranks right up there with a celeb going to jail or rehab. let the courts decide their fate and lets put our energy to some of the worlds more pressing issues.

A picture of Mrs Darwin should be sited at everybody's front door; this would scare away burglars and unwanted visitors!

Perhaps he as gone senile, and forgot he was supposed to be dead, and really thought he was missing. If that's the case, have some sympathy because it's a great scam, f****d up!!!

I would make them spend the amount they defrauded in three minutes. Jail to follow if they fail to meet deadline.
