i uninstalled Norton but parts of it have stayed, but i now hear that it is a common problem with some of the Norton internet security versions.
Anyway does any one know how i can get rid of the left over components of the program.

if you think Norton is good you must be one of the few people
because I’ve mostly heard bad things.

You hear bad things from the people who don't know how to properly configure it.
Norton is effectively uninstalled already but if you want it totally gone you can download a removal tool from Symantec's website.

Copy the link and follow the directions:

Use the Search function in Windows to look for the keywords norton or symantec and delete any files or folders associated with norton. Then usually this is not enough so you have to go into the windows registry and search for registry entries with the keyword norton.

Before messing with your registry create a restore point with Windows restore so if you screw something up using the registry editor you can back up to a known working point.

You can also back up your windows registry when you first get into regedit by going to File then selecting Export and naming your current registry as a file and saving it to your C: drive with the .reg extension.

Go to Start then Run and type in the Run line the word regedit and this will bring up your Registry editor window and at the top select Edit and down the menu select Find and type into the Find What line the word norton and click Find Next and it will scan your registry for the word norton. Not everything that the highlighter shows will be a norton file so you have to be careful and look at the file and path in the Data field to see if it is a norton file. If it is a norton file you right click and delete the highlighted file then hit the F3 key to find next. Keep hitting the F3 key to find next and it will continue searching. Try searching the registry with the keyword symantec and repeat this process. After you have deleted all the files associated with norton exit regedit and reboot your computer to make the registry changes take effect.

And you're correct Norton is garbage, I have been fixing computers for 16 years and Norton causes more problems than it fixes in my opinion. The above method is what I use to completely remove Norton.

ive never had a problem with norton and ive been using computers since the ark. why delete it when its probably the best security software out there. i tried mcafee and had nothing but problems and i tried AVG which was diabolical. Back on Norton now and mega pleased all round

If you dont mind doing so, and your computer didnt come from the 'factory' with it in, then do a complete system reboot. Go for avast and spybot as your providers. they are free and good. I found norton slowed the compu down tremendously, blocked everything. messed with games and allsorts. and they are ridiculously expensive to renew.
If you havent used the code and stated using it. u will be able to sell it too.so thats worth a trip to ebay or similar...

Delete it, go to the recycle bin and delete it permanently from the recycle bin.

You've heard bad things, but have you tried it?
