As the previous answerer stated, 'for who?'

For most of the European countries the economies were devastated and the cities and countrysides were torn up along with a reduction in farm production. With the decrease in population from war, the post-war reconstruction would have been more difficult than if there was more people.

For the British, the war put the British government into massive financial debt to America to pay for the arms and ammunition and other war equipment that the US sold Britain. The war also devastated the male population and that had a major affect upon post-war reconstruction.

The United States came out of the war a rich country. Wars are always profitable to companies that supply war supplies, and the US did just that. The war created much needed work for the millions of unemployed in the US (and other countries) because of the recession (the Wall Street Crash of 1929-30). This increase in jobs was on the farms and in the war production plants and then in other manufacturing plants within the US.

Because the US became the richest country following the war, it made the US a major economic influence in world affairs, militarily, economically and politically.

massive scale reparation costs and inflation due to over production of money. Germany was hit the worst due to being annihilated by the Allied forces. However West Germany soon experienced the "economic miracle," within a few years they had almost fully recovered from the decimation they withstood during the war and won the football world cup in 1954, demonstarting the superiority of Western aid over Eastern help in East Germany. Britain only finished paying it's war debt to America in the 90's, that shows you how the economy suffered.
