Pretty good actually. The major cost of living in the Bay Area is housing. If you only have to pay property tax and maintenance and not a mortgage that frees up a lot of money. I loathe public transportation in San Francisco but a lot of people are quite content with it. Not having a car could potentially lower the cost of living but if you own a house or condo and it comes with parking it could be a wash as far as the costs of owning and maintaining a car and using public transportation. On the other hand, without a car you have a much lower lifestyle.

It depends on the apartment size. A studio in a nice area can run you up to $1200.
Check here for some local prices:

Depends on if you want to live by yourself or with roommates. With a roommate, it can still cost you around $900-$1300/month depending on how many roommates you have. Check out Yahoo for rental listings.

What is average? A studio runs at least a grand! It also depends on the area. Check craigs.list also.
