Depends on the shelter. It is usually very expensive to run an animal shelter.. employees, office supplies (such as copiers, fax machines, computers, etc), cleaning supplies (kennel sanitizers, liquid hand sanitizer for the humans) and they may have a loan for the building, kennels, and other equipment when they started the shelter. Medical costs.. not only are their costs of shots/neutering but most shelters help dogs/cats with injuries cause by car accidents... and they also have to pay for euthanizing/incinerating (it's expensive that's why I mention it).

Certainly ask for a copy of where the money is going. You may be surprised at the costs involved in a shelter... and it would be interesting to find out where the majority of money goes in your local shelter.

Im sure you can get a list but they help get animals fixed at a cheaper rat and all that dog food and electric and washing the kennels and such. I had to do a little volunteer work at one and its rather expensive and they also put dogs and cats down and thats like 50 a shot at the vet so im sure that is some of the cost. You should ask wheer the money is going but im sure thats what they will tll you also cleaning supplies

Most shelters also have a 'want' list. Ours has theirs online, and you donate what they need the most. Things like canned catfoot, dog food, litter, bleach, old towels, birdseed, dish soap, folded newspapers, dog leashes, collars, etc.

It goes to feeding the animals, and buying them necessities, as well as luxury's such as toys. It may also help to pay to workers ad veterinarians hat help them.
