The prevailing wind direction will be determined by latitude. If equator to 30N the prevailing wind will be easterly; if 30 - 60 N, the prevailing wind will be westerly; and if 60 - 90 N the prevailing wind will be easterly. Now in the westerlies the wind will be affected by low pressure storms and frontal passages which will alter the prevailing wind direction.

The answer obviously depends on where you are, so you need to be more specific in your question. Where I live, near San Diego, California, the average direction is from the Northwest. If you're asking for some large scale average, I suspect it would be northerly in the northern hemisphere and southerly in the southern hemisphere. The average for the entire earth would have to be calm winds because of mass conservation.

Most of the time it blows out of the North. Most cold fronts are high pressure fronts that move in from the North and push the cold wind in front of it as it travels.

It depends upon the place you live.In the winter season(in december),the convection currents are comparatively less and the winds at a place are more influenced by local factors than by the three global winds which are weak at that time.
