Makarov won the Calder in 1989. He beat Mike Modano for the award

Makarov had 37 of the 63 first place votes
Modano finished 2nd in the voting
Roenick finished 3rd

It was the first time no Canadian born player finished in the top 3 in the voting for the Calder Trophy

For the 1998-99 season Chris Drury won the Calder Trophy. Marian Hossa finished second in voting to him that season.
