If your AVG is the free version you will not get an auto. update of the new version if there is one. You must download on a manual basis. Or if you have not updated your AVG, on a manual basis, then you need to open the AVG, and look for updates, so the updates can be downloaded.
Free version usually don't offer auto. updates. Only Superantispyware, that finds what all other miss & is free give you auto. updates. http://www.superantispyware.com

Check your system clock.
That message often displays if your system clock off.
if you need to do the update manually:
get the latest updates from
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/24/lng/us/tpl/v5
Choose the one that applies to your system, if in doubt, get the recommended or the optional update file and download the file to a directory on your computer that you can find later. You must remember where this is because you will have to tell AVG where to find these files later.
After you have the files,
1. Verify and update your computer's time and date, AVG uses this info to determine if you have the correct files.
2. Open the Control Center,
3. Double Click on the Update Manager or select it then press the Properties button at the bottom of the screen.
4. On the Properties screen unselect the option labeled "Do not ask for the update source", click Apply and Ok.
5. Now click the Update button on the bottom of the screen.
6. In the pop-up window, click the Folder button.
7. Navigate to the folder where you had downloaded the update files into and click Ok.
8. AVG will update now with the file you had selected unless it contains the same as you already had.
That should be all you need to have updated your system.
Note: Manual update is generally not recommended as it requires that you download the big full-update file. We strongly recommend to use the automatic update if at all possible as it downloads only the differential update file that is typically rather small (1/10th or less of the full update).
additionally, i would do the following instead:
Avast Home Edition is a complete ICSA certified. Avast includes the following components: On demand scanner with skinnable simple interface, just select what do you want to scan in which way and press the Play button; On access scanner, special providers to protect the most of available e-mail clients; Instant messaging- ICQ, Miranda; Network traffic - intrusion detection, lightweight firewall; P2P protection for Kazaa, BitTorrent; Web shield - monitors and filter all HTTP traffic; NNTP scanner -scans all Usenet Newsgroup traffic and all operations with files on PC; Boot time scanner - scans disks in the same way and in the same time as Windows CHKDSK does.
Version 4.7.1043 improves Boot time scanner, adds support for few new packers, and fixes few small issues.
Avast! Antivirus - http://www.avast.com
Pros: Just because it's free doesn't mean you have to compromise on quality. Avast does all the anti-virus work by itself, using it's comprehensive yet powerful resident scanning and on-the-go shields to provide you with full real-time protection. It has all the features of an expensive program, such as an accurate/outstanding detection abilities, plus a nice pack of neat features working together to protect you any harm from e-mails, surfing to file-sharing and such. In my opinion avast is definitely the best choice for free anti-virus if not rivals those of the commercial ones.
Pros: Avast is far more better than avg, having better interface, faster database update, less bugs than AVG,with powerful boot time scan,

The screen you are looking at is a Windows applet
I would suggest you find the AVG icon, right-click on it, and attempt to update it.
Although the best advice I can give you would be to invest in a proper security suite (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) from a reliable vendor (like mcafee, norton, etc) and keep it properly configured and up to date. Freeware - you get what you pay for.
Good Luck
