John B Coman was a Southern Cal tennis official who promoted the tiebreaker in the late '90s and 2000s to even out problems with wind, sun and other elements affecting tiebreakers. He called it the Balboa tiebreaker for a tennis club in his area. The USTA used it in some settings and it was also tagged "experimental" tiebreaker. After Mr Coman died in late 2005(I believe), the name was changed to Coman in his honor and the experimental tag was dropped.
I certainly appreciate his efforts, but I hate the thing when you are forced to use it indoors!
