Well, some of these things are tangible and some are not. We all have things we want to accomplish, eg., get an education, buy a house, get married, etc.
Then there are other kinds of things that transcend many years and stages -- we might say that at the end of our life we want to be a better person, to be at peace with ourselves and the world around us, and eventually, come to accept and no longer fear death in old age.

"things you must do before you die". Simple question, before you die. You Must LIVE Life.
"What is your purpose in life". Simple question.
Your purpose in life is to, LIVE Life.
There are no paranthesis to Living Life, i.e LIVING Life means, giving some or making some meaning happen.
That meaning can accomodate, anything.
So that, you can do what you want, to who you want and for whatever reason, you want.
Whether that be, Good, Bad or Indifferent. Is a question only Time, will tell.

I'm a mom, and continue to try to make my children follow paths that will not lead them into danger or trouble (though they are now pretty much on their own).
I've taught them good values, but can't be with them every second of every day...and the people they run into along the way, might well bring them down. No matter how old they get, I can't stop trying to shield them from all the bad in this world.

Purpose in life is a question that requires God otherwise the question itself is meaningless:
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell
Russell was a noted 20th century mathematician, philosopher and Nobel Laureate. He was also an atheist but he was honest enough to understand that we live a purposeless existence if we are without God.
We have a hard choice. If we reject God, we also reject all real reasons for living and we are forced (in order to keep our sanity) to invent reasons and attach great importance to them. If we don't reject God, then we should see that our great need for purpose must have been put into our human nature by God in order to point us to seek Him. So seeking God is our purpose.

If you believe in God, we were created for a purpose, to Love the Creator and His Creation. By worshiping our Creator, we partially meet this purpose and Loving our fellow Man finalizes our purpose in life. Unfortunately, we tend to worship ourselves and due to this selfishness, we neglect our fellow Man and our Creator.
