From what Kevin Costner's character in Field of Dreams, he brought a new pair of spikes, but they hurt his fieet, in the middle of the game he took them off, and played the rest of the game in his socks, the other players kidded him and called him "Shoeless" Joe and the same stuck.

One game as a teenager his cleats gave him a blister on his feet so he went to bat without shoes. While he was on base someone yelled something to the effect of "that Shoeless son of a gun" and the nickname stuck.

I THINK THE BLISTER STORY IS CORRECT. SUFFERING FROM A BLISTER, JOE TOOK HIS AT BAT BAREFOOT. HE REACHED BASE AND WAS YELLED AT BY A PATRON IN THE STANDS " LOOK AT THAT SHOELESS SON OF A GUN" OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO THAT. THE NAME OF 'SHOELESS JOE JACKSON' STUCK.
