I am two days past my due date. I had my first cervical exam this week. I was 2cm dilated. I have never had this done before and I was very relaxed going in. However, I yelped with the pain and practically fell off the table because I was squirming so much. I am not great with pain, but I can handle some and I don't generally react like THAT.

Was it just because my doctor didn't take it slow and seemed to ram her hand up in there quite roughly? Or is this kind of pain totally normal? I'm going again in a few days and I'm terrified almost to tears.

It hurts me too. I was really shocked that it hurt so much the first time they checked me during my first pregnancy. Now I'm always nervous at the doctor's office lately (I'm 38 weeks with baby #2) that she'll want to check my cervix.

It's even more uncomfortable when you're in labor, But it seems like you get used to it after the first couple of times because it seems like someone's coming in every 5 minutes to check you. Of course, once you have an epidural (if you want one), you don't feel it.

I have given birth to 4 children
I never had a problem with pain while being checked
The last baby I did
I had cervical cancer 2 years prior
The dr. told me it hurt b/c of the scarring from the procedure to remove the cancer

I don't remember being more than uncomfortable when my doctor checked dilation before I was in labor..But during labor..AHHH ouch, yeah that hurt for me....
Just tell your doctor that it was painful for you and maybe she can go slower or try to be more gentle...
Good luck

Oh honey, trust me, it hurts,. My nurses just shoved their hands inside, and they had those long sharp manicured nails...Its going to be uncomfortable. Just request they be a little more tender. Its normal to be sore. YOu're going to have a baby. It's all pain. Good luck.

If she pushed her finger(s) in it could cause the cervix to stretch (since your past your due date they tend to do that some times) and it will cause sharp crampy period-like pains. It is normal.

Next time tell her to take it easy.

Yes...typically, it does not feel good. They have to get pretty far in there. Totally normal. It's nothing compared to what lies ahead...:)

Yeah they tend to hurt pretty bad and I remember every time they came in to check me in the hospital I would cringe.
