There's this rumor going around on my rather small college campus that I'm a lez. I've been aware of it for a few weeks, but I've had a couple girls approach me and am getting invitations to gay club and feel that it's going a little too far. Tell them that I'm not interested, and they just say I'm in denial. I think that the rumors might stem from the fact that quite a few of my guy friends are gay and my gal friends are bi, but these are all people I've been friends with since before they came out in high school, and I can't very well just blow them off because of these rumors. I know very well that I'm straight; I've dated guys in the past and have no interest in girls. But there's really no one that I'm interested in right now, and I'm more concerned about getting my degree than going out of my way to locate a boyfriend. Help?

When someone tells you that you are "in denial" about being a lesbian, they are possibly trying to seduce you! Here's a way you can get them to shut up fast: ask them if they have a medical license. If they don't, they are possibly making a diagnosis without a license, which is a FELONY. Ask them what their qualifications are in psychiatry - an advanced degree that requires medical school and beyond. When they respond that they don't have any, then tell them that if they don't want to have the possibility of being arrested for practicing medicine without a license, they might want to consider shutting the "heck" up because they aren't qualified to make that "diagnosis". That will usually get them to shut up... FAST. Be sure to do it with a big smile on your face too. Then if they don't get the message, they are just stupid.

In the grand scheme of things, people only spread rumors because of their own latent desires. Turn the rumor back on the source. If that doesn't work or you don't know where the rumor comes from, take comfort in the fact that when you're lying on your deathbed, this moment in time won't matter a wink.

Rumors don't stop once you graduate high school -- unfortunately. You'll deal with people who like to start rumors your whole life. How you handle rumors is key. I think how you've handled the situation so far is good. Don't give any one more fuel for the fire, and it will eventually burn out. Rumors thrive on drama, so don't give them any. People will get bored with it and find some other poor soul to feed on.

People are going to believe what they want to believe. Why should should you care what they think? They are just a bunch of idiots listening to a rumor. In time it'll stop. You have nothing to prove to any one.

It will just blow over once a new rumor starts going around campus. if you are true to yourself, and secure...don't worry too much. word will get out also, as you are turning down offers of going out with a "thanks for asking, but I'm straight...."

I rode Harleys with my cousin who is a lesbian. So, everybody started saying I was a lesbian. You just have to ignore it. Focus on school like you are doing. Eventually, you will meet someone and prove them all wrong. Until then, let them talk!

If you're close to your degree, you can just put up with it for a little bit longer, and keep turning down girls.

Otherwise, find at least a token boyfriend, and be seen with him as much as possible.

Just go about your normal business, the only thing that matters is that you know who you are. Trust me there are worst thinngs than people saying you're a lesbian. ;) It will blow over.

the people who started the rumor are probably gay themselves and like you and want you to be gay.....just forget what they are saying. the only person that can tell you that your gay is yourself. if you were gay you wouldn't be denying it and you would know.
