had to change fuel pump in tank

The fuel pump sits in the gas, meaning it pushes it instead of pulling it. Does not need to be primed.

You're not giving enough information; what kind of car is this??? In general, though, fuel injection gasoline pumps will prime themselves best if you turn the ignition key "on" and "off" (without starting) about 15-20 times. This activates the fuel pump relay and primes the pump for you. Foreign cars, (non-American) usually have a cover plate in the trunk or under the rear seat to access the pump. Unfortunately, an American car usually requires that you drop the fuel tank to accesss the pump. Good Luck!!!

ok.. two possible answers

Electric fuel pump: This does not need priming.. hook it up turn it on and wait a bit. BUT You may have to crack the seal to the carb / injection system a bit to bleed off air but that is it the pipelines between the pump and the engine. This air holds the gas back

No air.. prob. the gas is not in the system yet.. if you have injectors keep turning the key off and on. If you have a carb. put a shot glass of gas directly into the carb and crank the engine....
