If it's a Siberian (longhaired) hamster, they're naturally agressive, so that's a problem. They're also nocturnal, so they will be happier to play in the evening/night than during the day when they want to sleep.
Male hamsters are more agressive than females. And all hamsters love their food so make sure when yours is out, you give it little bits of fruit or whatever...not too much, you don't want to make it sick or obese!
The fleece may be a good idea. Also make sure it has something to chew on to wear its teeth down.

Hamsters like all pets have to first develop a trust bond..
Like all animals they like consistency, as in feeding,
interaction time, quiet time,, Best to start off with a piece of an old shirt,, That has your scent on it,,, Place it in the cage, near the food and water.. Develop association between you
being the provider of feed and water.. Iv'e never known hamsters to be overly friendly, However develop your bond,
Keep consistent,,, and you will make the best of the situation
you can,, Hope this helps.

With any animal, trust is the key. Continue being the loving hamster owner that you are. Hamsters love to shred up their own bedding to make it just right, so yes, fabric scraps are great. Always let them sniff your fingers before you pet them. Give your hamster plenty of places to hide, like little boxes and leftover paper towel tubes. You could make a really fun maze for them from cardboard boxes.
Avoid being physically rough with them.
As long as you are "steady-eddie" and consistent they will learn to trust and love you.

Aside fom making them comfy, it is time alone that will tame the beast for you.It takes time for the animal to learn to trust you, and accept you as a friend. As time goes by, all of the experiences, all of the attention, the caring, and trusting will pay off....Try sweetening the deal with a little honey in the food mix......it won`t hurt, but don`t overdo it......
Avoid scaring it- make a certain noise before you pick it up, and BE SURE it is awake before opening the cage door...they are timid creatures, and are easily frightened, which is why they bite.

My hamster likes being touched, but only for a little while then he gets grumpy - they're all different.
Better to buy proper hamster bedding from a pet shop rather than use cut up shirts/towels. It's healthier for your pet. Mine loves the cotton wool type bedding you get at the pet shop.

No hamsters are dumb, you can however put in a jar to use as a toilet, for their reason they like this .
