My mazda protege came with a lug wrench that is only about 14 inches long. Is that long enough to tighten wheel lug nuts sufficiently? Or do I need to buy one of those large X-shaped lug wrenches?

as cheap as the x shaped lug wrenches are I would buy one as it makes taking the lugs off so much easier and faster and that way you can keep the x wrench forever and just switch it from car to car as you buy them.

A good X type is always better. The lug wrenches that come with a car will work "OK", but when dealing with lug nut removal you want a good wrench to work with.

Untiil you get a bigger lug wrench (or piece of pipe) you can stand on it to turn it, which will put enough pressure on it for most purposes--with it sticking out to the left to loosen, to the right to tighten

Buy yourself about 18" of 3/4" pipe .. it will slip over the jack handle and give you all the leverage you need.

Tightening them is the least of your problem.. Most threads will tighten on a spinning wheel anyway or give you plenty of warning if they are loose. BUT....If you have a flat on some back road and the tire was put on by a tire shop like most tires are, you will bust a gut trying to get it OFF with that short handle.
