My car has disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear. If my rear drum pads were to completely wear out, would my front brakes still do a safe job of stopping the car?

Hmm.. like everyone says.. Both brakes are needed to stop the car within a reasonable distance but your question asked if the front ones would do a safe job in stopping the car.

So the answer to that is Yes.. assuming the rear brakes were not functional but that the front brakes were unimpared, they would stop the car .. they would just take longer to do it the faster your speed. Most autos today have independent braking systems to provide for just such a problem. In the long term ...Your front brakes would also fail sooner because they are doing all of the work..(more heat, more friction, more wear and tear).. also there might be a little bit of extra control needed if your car was not on a perfectly straight course since the rear would be trying to go around the front (so to speak).

..

Most of the braking is done by the front brakes anyways since that is where the weight is biased when the car is at rest and even more so during heavy braking.

This guy seems to think that you don't need rear brakes:

But really, you should have all your brakes working. It isn't that big of a deal to keep them working. What's stopping you?

u have to remember that rear brakes are not only for improving the distance of stopping the car but also make stability at emergency stop. Also rear brakes are very important when braking on a snow if u ever experienced very big snow under your wheels

Yes, rear brakes are necessary. You need as much stopping power as possible. Replace the rear drum pads if needed.

your rear brakes also help stabalize you as you're stopping. and by the way, they're not called pads, they're called shoes.

no. stopping distance would increase up to 40% and front pad wear would skyrocket.

NO!, you need all 4 wheels to stop a vehicle safely.
