You can get some idea of the very best sites by looking at where the big observatories are located. Cerro Paranal in Chile, Mauna Kea in Hawaii, and Mt. Graham in Arizona, for example. But you may have more fun if you head for one of the big dark sky star parties. The Oregon Star Party and the Nebraska Star Party both have superb viewing conditions, plus you get hundreds of enthusiastic amateur astronomers and their telescopes, and activities for astronomers and their families. There are other big regional star parties, too.

Keck Observatory, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, if you can stand the altitude. And you might be given a cool tour of the facilities. They have the two largest telescopes in the world. (Or did the Russians build a bigger one recently?)
