Can anyone and list some external or uncontrollable influence that affected Roman life in major ways?? For some reason I can only think of social and cultural aspects and I'm supposed to write a brief essay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Egypt. They had a strong trade but eventually the people and government began to dislike Egypt because of Caesars relationship with Cleopatra.
The Gauls sacked Rome early on and they always kept that in their memory. Caesar therefor attacked and conquered Gaul as revenge.
Hanibal (Can't remember where he was from) attacked Rome as well. He came over the mountains and they did not expect this. It was almost like a pre-emptive attack. The Roman's won but it was hard for them to conceive what happened.
They were greatly influenced in their art and literature by the ancient Greeks. They copied their works and studied it. You showed that you were an elite and educated individual bu being able to speak the Greek language (the ROmans main language was Latin.) One of their heroes (Aeneas) was ment to have been essential for the founding of Rome and he escapet from the battle of Troy (which is an Ancient Greek Legend)
Also look into the Etruscans. They were there centuries before the Romans in around the same area and were a rather advanced civilization. We don't know much about them but they played a key role in Romes cultural development.
Good luck!

An external influence was the dependence on places like Egypt for grain supplies. Also, various barbarian tribes were always nipping at the edges of the Roman entity ( Republic or Empire) finally overrunning Rome, itself.

Life in Roman times for women was quite hard. The father was the most important member of the family. He had the power of life or death over everyone. When a new baby was born it would be laid at its father's feet - if the father picked the baby up it would live, and if he ignored the baby it would be taken away to die. Mothers and children were never seen as important.
From the 1st century B.C. women began to have more rights and could divorce unkind husbands. But they were never seen as really being equal to men.

I once learned that Romans put a high value on salt ("sal") and at times the army was paid in rations of salt. I was taught that was the origin of our word "salary". And, the origin of our phrase "worth one's salt".
