My steering wheel shakes back and forth like my car is trying to pull to the left. It does it at any speed but gets worse when I go faster and when I brake. It feels like my wheel wants to fly off my car. Its a 99 Cavalier. The problem feels like it is in the front end and when I brake a noise matches the shaking with a thumping sound

Could be:
* wheel alignment
* wheel balance
* tire pressures
* brake rotor
* collapsed brake caliper (very dangerous)
* loose lug nuts
* tire roundness
* belts moving around inside the tire(s)

and there other possibilities.

I had a friend that when he steped on the brakes it did that and it was because his brakes go too hot and warped the roaters and made the steering wheel shake like crazy.It could also be from metel on metal that makes it do that also.

To be more specific. You can have and issue with ball joints, poor struts or even bad tires. Check tire inflation to see that it is in spec. make sure lugs are very tight. check braking hardware; rotors, calipers, make sure you didn't snap a bolt for the calipers. If all this checks out fine then it will be a suspension issue. Do you hear cracking? could also be a halfshaft. could be wheel bearings. Could be bad bushings too.

Because you have an older car so it's possible that you have some suspension damage. Broken strut, damaged tie rod,,,,,,etc. The car pulling to the right indicates that car needs to be realigned. Also, check for tire and wheel damage. A wheel-weight may have come off one of the wheels. Good Luck.

Take it to the garage and have the tracking and wheel balancing checked,or perhaps the brakes and steering need checking. It sounds dangerous so get it checked tomorrow.
