It really depends on whether you play any other instruments. Playing piano give you a range of musical knowledge that will help you to learn almost any other musical instrument.

Playing an instrument that belongs to a particular section of instruments (woodwind, brass, strings, or percussion), will help you considerably to play another instrument from that section. For example, if you play the trombone then it will be quite easy to learn the tuba.

In my opinion, the easiest classical instrument to play would be one of the percussion instruments. This is because all that they require to be played is a good sense of rhythm. The hardest would be a woodwind or string instrument, as you need a natural talent just to be able to make a good sound out of them.

If you want to play any classical instrument, I would advise that you learn a basic knowledge of the piano before moving on to another instrument.

I would agree that the Saxophone is probably the easiest to learn (at least in the beginning). It is one of the few instruments that was invented and not developed. Adolph Sax basically wanted a clarinet that would break in octaves and not in 12ths. The result is an instrument that is fairly easy to produce sound on and with a very straight forward fingering system.

The flute is very difficult to get your first sound on, but after that it is not too hard. I would have to say the hardest instruments to initially learn are the brass instruments since any one valve combination or slide position could produce many different notes, where as on the woodwinds you push down the right buttons and the right note comes out. Of the brass instruments I would say that the hardest are the trombone, due to the ambiguity of slide positions and the French horn due to how close together the partial series (notes) are on the instrument. That said between those two, I would pick the horn.

In short,
easiest-Saxophone
hardest-French horn (I use the term French horn, even though it is a misnomer and the instrument is actually English in origin... not to be confused with the English horn, which came from Germany)

The recorder is probably the easiest to learn to play (other than the triangle of course, but you can't really play a lot on it). There's quite a bit of pre-classical (i.e. renaissance and baroque) music written for the recorder, and it's a very intuitive instrument.

As for the hardest I'd go for either the French horn or the organ. Pianos, oboes and harps are all known to be hard too.

Basically any instrument COUlD be hard to play. If you're used to playing the clarinet for instance changing to a brass instrument like the trombone would be very hard to do, as the embouchures are completely different.

Ther violin would probably be the hardest and the piano the easiest. This is the level of difficulty for beginners.
I think at the advanced level, all musical instruments are hard....none of them are "easy" to play .

Easiest: the "triangle" or cymbals.

The hardest: too difficult to make a choice. But here are my candidates:

Organ, any of the strings - including harp -, oboe, bassoon and the French Horn.

Wotan

Violin. It may sound a bit screechy at first but it's worth the effort...or piano...because the notes are there and all you have to do is know what key to press...a bit like typing...

The Snoot Flute would be the easiest.

I'd say, woodwind-wise, sax is by far the easiest, oboe or bassoon hardest.
