You'd have to ask them.
Used to be that earlier astronomers were constantly being monitored for life signs (heart beat, blood pressure...) so for them, it would have been difficult because the sudden change in pulse and pressure would have shown on the monitors in Houston.
Nowadays, I do not know. There is less monitoring and cameras are not on all the time.
