Lowes is more geared towards women, and does more training with their employees. Home Depot is more geared toward the contractor end of things.
Also, Lowe's carries more items in stock, especially when you start to look at the appliances. Remember if there is a price difference either store will match/beat a competitor's price gladly. Just let the salesperson know.
Also, if it matters to you, Lowe's is better to their employees. They are far more flexible with schedules and better with the benefits (even part time employees can get health insurance, for example). They also give their employees discounts, and specials over the holidays.

As a former remodeler/business owner for 25 years, I would always go to Home Depot first ( they've been in my area for about 10yrsplus now) and then I would try Lowes ONLY if I couldn't find what I was looking for at the Depot. I found and still find Home Depot to be much easier/ quicker. Less "weekend" carpenters, less "department store crap", often better building material selection, better prices and...they always had carts ready to load in the appropriate isle (Lowes was a pain in the a## when it came to scouring the parking lot looking for a cart...lol). As far as informative employees go, good luck anywhere. With the exception of perhaps the electric or plumbing department (retired tradesman here hopefully) I would take ANY advice with a grain of salt. Remember these people are only making 8-12 bucks an hour. As a self employed carpenter and often jack of all trades, I and many good tradesmen made/make many times that an hour( or should anyway). The really knowledgable tradesmen don't work at Depots and Lowes...They're in outside sales, writing paychecks or swinging a hammer. Btw, most builders don't shop at any of these home improvement stores..I must admit, I do like Lowe's garden center much better than Home Depot's....
So, if you want a 2 x 4 and you want a toaster oven in one possibly/hopefully convenient stop.......go to Lowes. If you just want a 2 x 4, go to Home Depot. If you want a straight/true 2 x 4, good luck...lol. Cheers.

Where I'm at in Central Il the Lowes might have 3 cash registers open on a Saturday morning, The Home Depot is more expensive. Acutually I prefer Menard, cheaper, and every cash register is manned or womanned as the case may be.

You know, I keep hearing a lot of you talk about illegals hanging out at Home Depot's, but I've never seen it. Where is this happening and why?

Depands if you're thinking price wise or quality? Price I would go to HD it's always a little less money there, and Lowes for the quality of the product you pay a little more, and I think that Lowes is friendlier and cleaner.

their about the same but home depot personnel are more knowledgable / helpful. Lowes appeals to women more because they have more appliances and interrior decorating items.
