I was thinking of getting a forced air heater for working in the garage. Between propane and kerosene heaters I was wondering if anyone would know which one would be cheaper to use fuel wise and which would be safer carbon monoxide wise. I know they both give off CO and it needs to be vented but I thought I heard somewhere that kerosene burns cleaner. I appreciate any input.

I would say that both burn pretty clean. The problem with propane is the gas is heavy and if there is a leak the gas flows along the floor and ignites. Kerosene has a slight odor to it. I think there are kerosene heaters as big as VW's. Both produce very large amounts of CO so be careful in a closed garage. If you can pick up a CO alarm and put it in a place in the garage to let you know its getting dangerous. I have used both and the propane seems to give me a splitting head ache

I never used a propane heater. I have a kerosene heater purchase in the early 1980's. I use it in the house once in a while when the outside temp is in the single digits or worse. I can tell you that it will smell. I eliminate any smell by lighting it outside and refilling it before it goes out. I keep it by the front or back door and supplement it with a small, very cheep electric fan. It WILL heat an entire house. If you use it correctly you will be fine. Light it outside close to a door and bring it inside safely close to the same door. Use a small fan to increase efficiency. I agree with the maintenance. The wick will have to be replaced yearly. Kerosene prices have gone up which is pure gouging at 5.25 a gal.

I would rather have kerosene than propane. Monitor and Toyo make nice kerosene heaters that work very efficiently. The toyo can also use #2 fuel oil.

I would go with the propane heater and vent it outside. Have a 100# tank set outside with auto fill and enjoy...
