Basically you're purifying the candles and focusing your intent ito the candle.

For example. Let's say I want to do a spell to help me break my bad smoking habit. I could do a candle spell to aid me.

But first I would need to cleanse and consecrate the black candle I'm useing for this spell. So I would take some salt water and "wash" the candle, all the while visualizing all the spiritual "dirt" on the candle being washed away. I would do this so that the candle is metaphysically clean and doesn't have energies that may interfear with my spell. Afterall, a person leaves metaphysical fingerprints on every item they touch. How many people touched that candle before you did? You have no clue what they were thinking about or doing that could interfere with your goals.

Which brings us to the next part. After the candle is cleansed, you want to charge the candle with "intent". Think of it this way. You emptied out everything that was "in" the candle, and now you want to "fill it up" again, but only with thoughts/ideas that will aid your spell. You're purposely covering it with YOUR fingerprints. One way to do this is to use oil, one that fits with your spell would be good (Ex: dreamwork spells are good with Lavander oil & rose oil) Or if your budget is tight you can use plain old olive oil. (Let's hear it for the kitchen witches ;) ) After I have my oil of choice, I would rub the candle down with the oil while thinking of myself free from smoking, the bad habit broken. At the same time I would visualize the oil filled with "Smokeing-free" thoughts, seeping into the candle.

After that, if you have a God or Goddess you follow, you might ask them to bless the candle, or use the elements to do so.

And there you go. One Consecrated black candle good for banishing bad habits.

And do remember two things (my standard warnings). #1) Karma. #2) Be careful what you wish for.

the most simple consecration is by saltwater & incense. In sacred space, mix salt into water & sprinkle it onto the candle while saying something to the effect of " By (insert diety name here)'s power I cleanse & consecrate this candle for (insert intened use here) as I will it, so it shall be done" pass the candle through the incense smoke & say the same words. Consecration is a method of purification as well as charging the object for magical use. "Dressing the candle" is also a common practice in candle magic, by annointing candles with specific oils, it can imbue the energies of the oils into the spell as well, therby enhancing the effect. A few book's to read on the topic of candle magic is Raymond Buckland's practical candleburnign rituals, and advanced candle magic. As I browse amazon there are many more books on the subject that I have not explored, but they may be worth reading as well.

There are many ways to do it based on what tradition you are following.

The simpliest way is to pick up the candle and say, "I purify you in the name of "insert your deity name here", as I will, so mote it be."

Or you can do the whole baptism of the candle in salt, earth, water and fire.

Or put it out at full moon for the moon to do it for you.

Or some other way mentioned by someone here.

It really doesn't matter. True magick is in your heart and your head. The rest are just props you use to focus your "will".

I will suggest that before you start trying spells, that you read about what you are getting into before you just go do it. If you don't know a simple purification spell, then you're not ready for anything bigger.

If the candle is to represent something about you or your life,
use a tear.
If it represents something non human salt water.
If it represents someone else you want to help any fragrant oil.
If it represents someone else you want to stay away Urine.
If it represents someone else you want to hurt... don't use a black candle.
The best way to hurt someone else is to burn a white or yellow candle asking that they get exactly what they want.
The rebound on you is manageable, and if they are good, you helped them with the problem that in all likelihood caused you to want to hurt them in the first place. Otherwise they chose their own destiny.

I need to know what kind of spell it's for. I can't tell you how to consecrate a candle if it's for black magick. Please be honest and remember the law of three.

what spell are you doing, you won't find many churches with
black candles in, so unless you can dupe a preacher into doing it i think you're fighting a losing battle.
